We Remodeled This Basement into an Amazing Family Entertainment Space

At KLM Kitchens Baths Floors, we love taking an unfinished basement and turning it into a space the whole family actually wants to use. This recent project is a perfect example. We finished it for a family that needed room for music, workouts, entertaining, crafts, and a fun spot for the grandkids—all while making sure it never felt like a typical basement.

Main Family Room & Snack Bar
We started with a large open family room and built in a practical snack bar. It includes a stainless refrigerator and freezer, custom cabinets with soft-close doors and drawers, a quartz countertop, and a tiled backsplash. The upper cabinets are 40 inches tall with two-piece crown molding and LED under-cabinet lighting.

Right in the same space we created a theater area around a 99-inch flat-screen TV. We matched the upstairs trim with 5¼-inch baseboard and shoe molding, then wrapped the support columns and added crown so everything feels intentional. In the higher ceiling areas we installed a suspended 2x2 3-D panel system that hides the grid and gives a more residential look. Throughout the basement we used LED puck lights instead of traditional cans—they’re easier to place around joists and give clean, even light. The flooring is MSI click-together 100% vinyl in a light oak. It’s fully waterproof and holds up well to everyday family use.
Pocket Office
Just off the main room we created a compact office. The homeowners already had cabinets upstairs that weren’t being used efficiently, so we carefully removed them and reinstalled them here. It gave them extra storage without buying new. We also swapped the old ball-and-catch hardware on the double doors for strong magnetic catches—a small upgrade that works much better.

Soundproof Music & Game Room
One of the homeowners’ top requests was a dedicated music and game room that wouldn’t disturb the rest of the house. We framed the walls with 2x6s and filled them with soundproof insulation, then did the same in the ceiling. The result is a room that keeps the volume contained.
Inside we placed a pool table under a specialized light that eliminates shadows on the playing surface. We wrapped the steel support columns so they disappear into the design. Concert posters now cover the walls, and we turned a bump-out into a stage-like area with side curtains and backlighting exactly as the homeowner envisioned.
Grandkids Clubhouse, Craft Room & More
Under the stairs we built a fun little clubhouse/play area for the grandchildren (complete with a “Girls Only” door). Nearby, we created a dedicated craft room with generous closet space and deep shelving so supplies stay organized and easy to reach.
The full bathroom features 12x24 Pomea Carrera gold tile paired with a matching Kolkata gold quartz countertop on Countryside maple shaker cabinets in a caramel stain. Subtle brown veining ties the surfaces together. In the shower we installed a niche with basket-weave mosaic tile and a Moen Annex dual-head system (fixed head plus handheld).
We also finished an exercise room fully equipped with weights and a treadmill. The adjacent mechanical/furnace room received as much finished flooring and wall surface as possible, plus a 36-inch door for future service access. To keep the space comfortable year-round, we added a separate zone HVAC system just for the basement.

The Finished Result
When we wrapped up, the homeowners had a lower level that feels like an extension of the main living spaces rather than a basement. Every zone serves a clear purpose—entertaining, music, workouts, crafts, play, and quiet work—while still flowing together. Practical details like waterproof flooring, soft-close hardware, proper soundproofing, and matching trim make the space durable and easy to live in.
